They are devices placed inside the penis and are a recommended treatment for men with erectile dysfunction after other treatments have failed. Penile prostheses should be considered if the patient has tried all treatments but has not regained sufficient erection for sexual activity.

Although penile prosthesis implantation is the least preferred treatment method for erectile dysfunction requiring incision in the penis, most men and their partners report that they are satisfied with the treatment.

A catheter (catheter) is placed in the bladder to collect urine during penile prosthesis implantation. Next, the surgeon (urologist) will make an incision under the glans or in the lower abdomen. The surgeon selects the correct size implant and places the implant cylinders into the penis. All implants are customized to body size. If a two-piece inflatable prosthesis is being fitted, a pump and valve are placed in the scrotum. For the three-piece inflatable prosthesis, an additional reservoir (water tank) will be placed inside the abdominal wall. After the device is placed, the surgeon sutures the incisions. Penile prosthesis implantation surgery usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour.

Serious pain after penile implant surgery is rarely relieved with medications. Mild pain may persist for several weeks.

Antibiotics should be used for 7-10 days to prevent infection.
